A few highlights from covering the Rattling Off-Road Epic and Enduro Weekend. It was two days of April mountain bike racing on the beautifully-maintained trails of Weiser State Forest in Central Pennsylvania, presented by race organizer extraordinaire Mike Kuhn of High Speed Cycling/The Outdoor Experience Organization.

Pro Bono Event Shoot: Black & Blue Ball for MDA

A few years ago I was asked to shoot a charity event put on by local Philadelphia-area motorcycle dealer, Brian’s Harley-Davidson. I don’t consider myself an event photographer, but the practice is not completely foreign to me. The event was fun and the cause — the Muscular Dystrophy Association, with a focus on sending kids to camp — is a great one.

When the event rolled around the following year I was in a constant state of semi-horizontality due to a severely broken leg.

So after a couple years off from The Black & Blue Ball I was anxious to get back to shooting some images of biker guys and gals partying and emptying their wallets for a great cause. The festivities include a cocktail reception, formal sit-down dinner, live auction with professional auctioneer, speech from a leading medical researcher in the field  and DJ and dancing, all emceed by a stand-up comedian.

Can’t wait to do it again next year.

Snow day!

Who doesn’t love a snow day? Well, a real snow day. The kind when you peek at your phone from under the covers to see a satisfying “don’t come in” message from the office. Not the kind when you sacrifice life and sanity to white-knuckle your way in, only to find your co-workers and clients chose not to make the same sacrifice.

Natalie and I took full advantage of a recent real snow day here on the Delaware River, getting LanceDogstrong out on the canal path and into the park.

The next day bright golden sunlight beautifully lit the snow blanketing every surface. Every surface except the roads, which meant it was back to work.

At “The Space” in Frenchtown, NJ

There are certain advantages to our home along the Delaware River. We’re virtually equidistant to New York City and Philly, sitting along a corridor of chromatic river towns like a vein pulsing with creative energy. And there’s plenty of space in between to maintain your connection with the natural world (and disconnect from the digital), whether on the water, on the trails or on the rocks. It’s a pretty special place.

Although reminders of its specialness are not typically necessary, it’s worth standing back and recognizing some glaring ones. For example, an underground show featuring world class musicians with the intimacy afforded by what is essentially a out-of-the-way storage space; a very well-outfitted-for-secret-live-music storage space, but a swanky club in an urban center it is not.

One such show happened last night, featuring a percussion performance by Billy Martin (most notably of Medeski Martin & Wood), and a full band set fronted by Kyp Malone (of TV on the Radio). Not pictured is a performance by three-fifths of Honeychurch.
